How is the balance in your brain? Imagine your brain is a scale, with the things that burden your brain on the left: social media, work meetings, negative thoughts, performance pressure, sugar, social obligations, and alcohol, for example. On the right, you have the things that help your brain relax: meditation, walks in nature, good nutrition, sleep, your passions, gratitude, physical affection, and exercise.
Imagine your scale:
To gain insight into the state of your balance, you can make a list of things you would place on the left side (things that cost energy) and things on the right side (things that give energy). Which side dominates your days? Draw a picture of what your balance looks like.
Does the balance tip more to the left? More to the right? Or is it perfectly in equilibrium? If the balance tips to the left, your brain is under pressure and consumes more energy than it receives. In that case, you run the risk of burnout, depression, or other health problems. If the balance tips more to the right, you may feel unfulfilled, bored, or aimless. In an ideal world, the balance would be perfectly in equilibrium for everyone.
Balance your scales:
By visualizing your energy consumption and output in this way, you can see what is causing the imbalance in your life. The heavier the weight on the left side of the scale, the more attention you need to pay to your inner processes on the right side. We often do the opposite: when we are tired, frustrated, or anxious, we pile even more onto the left side of the scale. We eat unhealthily, scroll through social media, are jealous of others, watch TV for hours, and sleep less. By becoming aware of this process, it becomes easier to do the things on the right side of the scale. Things that consist of restoring the connection with your inner self and the here and now, which brings peace and calm. And with that, the balance on your scale.
