Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is an herb with a very strong reputation, particularly for supporting liver function and blood sugar metabolism.* The name "milk thistle" comes from the legend that the white spots on the leaves come from the milk of the Virgin Mary. For milk thistle supplements, the seeds (fruit) are typically used for extraction. The black pericarp contains flavonolignans (including silymarin, with silybin as its main component), flavonoids, and phenolic derivatives. Silybin is the main active ingredient. Vitals' Milk Thistle PS contains the branded ingredient Siliphos**, a silybin extract with significantly improved bioavailability through the combination with phosphatidylcholine (Phytosome technology). It is standardized to 60 mg silybin per capsule.Milk thistle extract (silybin) supports liver function in two ways. It influences the structure of the outer cell membrane of liver cells, preventing toxic substances from penetrating the cell interior. It also stimulates regeneration and the formation of new liver cells by influencing specific enzymes.*
Furthermore, milk thistle can contribute to normal and stable blood sugar levels by positively influencing sugar metabolism.*
