Application of Vitals Psylliumvezels Biologisch:
Psyllium is a natural source of soluble and fermentable fiber. It is extracted from the seed husks of the Plantago ovata plant, which is primarily grown in India. Psyllium fiber can absorb up to ten times its own weight in water. It cannot be broken down by digestive enzymes in the small intestine and therefore arrives intact in the large intestine. And thanks to its high water solubility, it can be broken down (fermented) by the intestinal flora in the large intestine, forming, among other things, short-chain fatty acids (such as butyrate).Other soluble fibers are mainly found in vegetables, fruits, legumes, and grains such as oats. An advantage of psyllium fiber over other soluble fibers is that fermentation in the large intestine is relatively slow, meaning psyllium consumption is less likely to cause side effects that can occur with other (soluble) dietary fibers, such as bloating.
The recommended total daily fiber intake for adults is 30-40 grams. People with insufficient fiber intake can supplement their diet with psyllium husk. Psyllium husk can be taken with (plenty of) water, but it can also be incorporated into food.
Psyllium is also a good gluten substitute in recipes and can be used as a binding agent in bread (approximately 4 grams per 500 grams of flour), healthy snacks, sauces, and soups. Psyllium can also be added to smoothies or breakfast cereals, for example.
