Mebendazole (5) |
Worm infections are common and can be very annoying. A worm infection usually occurs when the eggs of the worm are swallowed. This can be caused, for example, by contact with soil or compost, eating raw or undercooked (beef) meat, or by eating raw food, such as fruit and vegetables, which have been contaminated with human or pig feces during cultivation. However, the infection can only take place when the source, ie the soil, the beef or the faeces, already contains eggs. The way to become infected also differs per worm species.

What does Mebendazole do?
The active substance Mebendazole is a medicine that falls under the category of antihelminthic (anti-worm). Mebendazole kills worms, worm eggs and worm larvae. Mebendazole does this because it prevents the absorption of nutrients for the worms. It can be used for various worm infections, such as roundworm, pinworms, whipworm, tapeworm and hookworm.
Using Mebendazole
Mebendazole is available in boxes of 2 or 6 tablets. How long you need to take the medicine depends on the type of worm you are infected with. For pinworms, 2 tablets spread over two weeks are usually sufficient. So you take that 1 and on day 15 a tablet. With an infection of roundworms or whipworms, a course usually lasts 3 days, where you take 1 tablet 2 times a day. Always read the package leaflet before use and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
Also be aware that an infection can spread. Therefore, think extra about hygiene and treat all family members.
NB!
Mebendazole may interact with other medications. For example, Mebendazole should not be used in combination with the antibiotic Metronidazole. This medicine increases the risk of a serious skin condition with blistering. When in doubt, always consult your doctor or pharmacist.
