A special superfood for breakfastWith the advent of the internet and social media, we have gained much greater insight into foreign cuisines. As a result, dishes specifically linked to a particular region have become increasingly well-known. This also applies to natto, a fermented soybean product that has been part of Japanese cuisine for hundreds of years. Natto is made by fermenting soybeans with the bacterium Bacillus subtilis natto. During the fermentation process, characteristic compounds such as vitamin K2 (in the form of menaquinone-7) and nattokinase (a unique enzyme with a specialized function) are created.
Natto is an incredibly rich source of these nutrients and is therefore known as a superfood. In Japan, it's commonly eaten for breakfast with rice, egg, and mustard. Japanese people who regularly consume natto ingest higher amounts of nattokinase and vitamin K2 than those who don't eat natto. Natto isn't readily available everywhere. Moreover, it has a very distinctive flavor, to say the least, making natto a food for some. Fortunately, it's now possible to incorporate nattokinase (and vitamin K2) into dietary supplements, so you don't have to eat natto to benefit from these nutrients.
The best nattokinase comes from Japan
In 1998, the Japanese company Japan Bio Science Laboratories (JBSL) successfully isolated nattokinase from fermented, non-GMO soybeans using a patented production process. Their nattokinase is branded NSK-SD®, which stands for Natural Super Kinase-Spray Dried. One Vitals Nattokinase-NSK capsule contains 100 mg of NSK-SD®. This corresponds to an enzyme activity of 2000 Fibrinolytic Units (FU). 2000 FU approximates the amount of nattokinase consumed by an average person with an average serving of approximately 50 grams of natto. Nattokinase-NSK does not contain vitamin K2, which is available as a separate supplement if desired.
Producing pure nattokinase with good enzyme activity is far from easy. Several laboratory tests are required to accurately determine the quality of a nattokinase supplement. NSK-SD® passes all these tests with flying colors, unlike some other nattokinase supplements on the market. Moreover, the quality and safety of NSK-SD® have been repeatedly confirmed in various human studies. Finally, it is the only nattokinase on the market to receive an official safety assessment from the EFSA, which has led to its approval as a supplement in Europe. In short, the best nattokinase comes from Japan and can be found in Vitals' Nattokinase-NSK.
