Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) - the most absorbable form of vitamin D for humans - is a fat-soluble vitamin that is supplied partly through the skin (UV light) and partly through food.It is responsible for the formation and maintenance of strong bones and teeth and ensures immunity through the regulation of interleukins and cytokines.
When there is a lack of sunlight and/or a diet low in vitamin D3 (e.g. during winter periods, in institutionalised elderly people), deficiency may occur and supplementation is indicated.
