Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) - the form of vitamin D most readily absorbed by humans - is a fat-soluble vitamin that is supplied partly through the skin (UV light) and partly through food.It is responsible for the formation and maintenance of strong bones and teeth and ensures good immunity through the regulation of interleukins and cytokines.
In the case of a lack of sunlight and/or a diet poor in vitamin D3 (for example during winter periods, in institutionalised elderly people), a deficiency may occur and supplementation is indicated.
