S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine (SAMe) is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is primarily produced in the liver and is not found in food. It can be formed in the body by combining adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and the amino acid L-methionine. SAMe plays a role in the transfer of sulfur in the body and is converted via the methionine cycle into cysteine, which can then be converted into glutathione or taurine. SAMe also plays a role in the formation of creatine, which is important for athletes. Melatonin requires SAMe as a methyl donor.
