Coenzyme Q10 (often abbreviated to CoQ10 and also known as ubiquinone) was first discovered in humans by Lamberts consultant Dr. Len Mervyn. CoQ10 is a vitamin-like substance found in the mitochondria of every cell in our body. It is these mitochondria that are responsible for 50% of the energy derived from food. Therefore, it is not surprising that we find the highest concentrations of CoQ10 in those organs with the greatest energy requirements, such as the heart muscle and the liver, and in tissues that regenerate quickly, such as the gums. CoQ10 is primarily used to maintain healthy gums, is beneficial for the heart, and supports weight management.CoQ10 can be obtained through the diet, particularly from organ meat. However, the cooking process unfortunately destroys the CoQ10. Although the body is capable of producing the substance itself, that production decreases as we age.
