The oil found here is gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is a fatty acid necessary for the body (essential fatty acid) for the production of certain hormones, including the hormone-like substance prostaglandin PGE1. PGE1 participates in the regulation of the neurogenic, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems, skin condition, and other biological functions. GLA is often recommended to women during menstruation, menopause, or to people with skin problems.
