In the wild, Cordyceps grows on caterpillars, where the mycelium parasitizes the caterpillar and eventually forms a flesh. This wild Cordyceps is extremely rare and expensive, which has stimulated the development of controlled fermentation techniques to produce the mushroom on a larger scale.
