Folic acid is one of the B vitamins. It is currently widely accepted that a folic acid deficiency in the first three months of pregnancy increases the risk of neural tube defects (manifested as spina bifida) in the developing baby. Low folic acid levels are associated with cardiovascular disease in both men and women.Folic acid is necessary for the normal production and maturation of red blood cells. The metabolism of folic acid is closely linked to that of vitamin B12. Folic acid is absorbed from food primarily in the first part of the small intestine, then transported to the liver, where it is metabolized and stored.
