Therefore, a positive TSH level of more than 5 IU/ml indicates an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), which requires more TSH. The test is therefore suitable for testing whether your thyroid is underactive. In rare cases, an overactive thyroid can also occur. This can only be determined in a laboratory setting after referral by your GP.
