Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an herb that originates from the traditional Indian health system, Ayurveda. The roots of the plant, in particular, have been used for centuries for their unique properties. The name "ashwagandha" comes from Sanskrit and refers to the root's characteristic odor: ashva means "horse" and gandha means "smell."Ashwagandha is known for its bioactive compounds such as withanolides, whitasomniferanolide, withaferin A, anahygrine, anaferine, and cuscohygrine. These compounds make the herb popular during periods of mental and physical exertion. Ashwagandha provides support in stressful situations and is therefore often used to promote relaxation and balance.*
Many supplements use leaf extract in addition to the root because it's less expensive. However, the root contains significantly more active ingredients. The patented KSM-66® extract therefore contains only the root of the ashwagandha plant and is known as a full-spectrum extract that preserves the natural balance of active ingredients.
Another unique feature of KSM-66® is its traditional, natural extraction process. The roots are pretreated with milk, as is customary in Ayurveda. The extraction process is carried out without the use of alcohol or chemical solvents. Therefore, traces of lactose may be present in the final product.
