Lactoferrin is a protein that the body produces itself. Proteins are important building blocks from which humans, animals, and plants are made. The name lactoferrin refers to cow's milk (lacto), in which the protein was first discovered, and to iron (ferrin), to which it can bind.The body produces lactoferrin in glands such as the mammary glands, salivary glands, and pancreas. Lactoferrin is found in bodily fluids such as saliva, sweat, and stomach and intestinal juices, but the largest amounts are found in breast milk. It is also secreted by white blood cells. When we exercise intensely, our body can produce more lactoferrin.
Lactoferrin is found in cow's milk, but also in the milk of other animal species. A glass of cow's milk (250 milliliters) contains approximately 25 milligrams of lactoferrin.
Breast milk contains large amounts of lactoferrin. The amount in breast milk varies. The first breast milk, also called colostrum, can contain up to 7 mg/ml of lactoferrin. After a few weeks, the amount decreases to 1-4 mg/ml of lactoferrin.
No safe upper limit has been established for supplements containing lactoferrin, but there are indications that a daily intake of up to 600 mg is safe.
