Perilla oil is rich in the Omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Perilla oil contains the highest percentage of alpha-linolenic acid. ALA is converted into EPA and DHA in the liver.ALA is an essential fatty acid, which means your body cannot make it, so you must get it from the food and drinks you consume. Your body can convert some ALA into EPA and then into DHA. Therefore, obtaining EPA and DHA from food (and dietary supplements) is the only practical way to increase the levels of these Omega-3 fatty acids in your body.
Omega-3 fatty acids are important components of the membranes that surround every cell in the body. DHA levels are particularly high in the retina (eye), the brain, and sperm cells. Omega-3 fatty acids also provide calories to give your body energy for various functions.
Furthermore, Perilla oil contains linoleic acid (Omega-6) and oleic acid (Omega-9), each in a share of approximately 15%.
