Perilla oil is rich in the omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Perilla oil contains the highest percentage of alpha-linolenic acid. ALA is converted to EPA and DHA in the liver.ALA is an essential fatty acid, meaning your body cannot make it, so you must get it from the foods and drinks you consume. Your body can convert some ALA to EPA and then to DHA. Therefore, getting EPA and DHA from food (and supplements) is the only practical way to increase the levels of these omega-3 fatty acids in your body.
Omega-3 fatty acids are important components of the membranes that surround every cell in the body. DHA levels are especially high in the retina (eye), brain and sperm cells. Omega-3 fatty acids also provide calories to give your body energy for various functions.
