Nature's Answer Black Cohosh Root (Cimicifuga racemosa) is a perennial plant that can grow up to 2.5 meters tall and prefers shady spots in forests and shrubby areas. You can easily recognize it by its creamy white or yellow flower spikes. Black Cohosh is found in eastern Canada and the United States. It grows as far south as Florida and also grows wild in Europe, where it has spread itself from cultivated plants.The word Cohosh is a Native American word meaning “rough,” referring to the gnarled root structure of the plant. The root of the plant has been used extensively by Native Americans for female complaints, hence one of its nicknames “squawroot.” The important compounds come from the dark, gnarled rhizomes, which are harvested in the fall.
