Vitals Super Krill Oil 590 mg is derived from Euphausia superba, a small, shrimp-like crustacean that lives in vast swarms in the clear waters of Antarctica. Krill feed on algae that grow beneath the Antarctic ice. Algae are the original source of the long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in krill and fish. What makes krill oil unique is that it contains EPA and DHA in the highly absorbable phospholipid form. Therefore, krill oil, at a similar dosage of EPA and DHA, provides greater bioavailability compared to fish oil.Furthermore, unlike fish oil, krill oil contains naturally occurring choline, which has a positive effect on the liver and contributes to the maintenance of cell membrane structure. Finally, krill naturally contains a small amount of astaxanthin, which gives krill oil its beautiful, deep red color.
Omega-3 fatty acids as phospholipids
What makes krill oil special compared to fish oil and algae oil is the form in which the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA occur. While these long-chain fatty acids in fish oil and algae oil are in the form of triglycerides, krill oil contains EPA and DHA in the form of phospholipids. Phospholipids are lipids that form the main structural component of all our cell membranes. Because EPA and DHA in krill oil are already bound to phospholipids, these fatty acids are more easily absorbed into the cell membranes. Therefore, when supplementing with krill oil, a slightly lower dose of EPA and DHA is sufficient to achieve the same effect than with fish oil or algae oil supplements. However, in situations where large amounts of EPA and DHA are required, a higher-dose EPA/DHA product is better suited due to the relatively high price of krill oil.
