Cat's claw belongs to the Rubiaceae family and originates from the jungles of Peru. It is a climbing plant with curved thorns on its branches that resemble cat's claws. In Latin, cat's claw is called 'Uncaria Tomentosa'. Uncaria, meaning 'hooked at the end', refers to the thorns located at the base of the leaves. Tomentosa refers to the hairs found on the underside of the leaf.The indigenous peoples of the Amazon region also call cat's claw 'the sacred herb of the rainforest'. They used the root and the inside of the bark to support the immune system. The bark can only be harvested when it is at least 8 years old. Once the plant has been harvested, it can be stripped, leaving the inner bark where the most important active ingredients are located. The plant contains many pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids and procyanidolic oligomers that make the plant unique.
