It is a semi-essential amino acid because, under certain circumstances, its synthesis is insufficient to meet the body's needs.Supplementation with N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) has the advantage over L-cysteine that it is better tolerated, has higher bioavailability, and is less susceptible to oxidation.
