Mucuna pruriens, or velvet bean, is a tropical climbing plant that grows exceptionally fast. Within a year, the originally South Chinese or East Indian tree can reach a height of at least three to a maximum of 18 metres. Incidentally, today we also find the member of the leguminous genus widely in Africa, America and the West Indies. Mucuna pruriens is mostly cultivated for its purple bean-like pods, which are rich in several health-promoting nutrients. The most important is the so-called levodopa (l-dopa), of which the velvet bean is actually the richest source worldwide!

L-Dopa is the direct precursor substance of dopamine, the neurotransmitter released by eating meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, avocado, nuts, seeds and legumes, among others. Nevertheless, dopamine is one of the most vulnerable neurotransmitters.

The velvet bean contains between 3.1 and 6.7% l-dopa, making it even the richest source of levodopa known. Yet you have to eat a lot of the fruit if you want to experience any effect of the l-dopa. That is why Vitakruid Mucuna pruriens contains an extract, in which the active substances of the velvet bean are present in high numbers.

Besides the quality of the extract, the dosage is also important, of course. A higher dosage simply provides more active substances and therefore more effect. Most velvet bean supplements contain between 250 and 400 mg of extract per capsule. Research shows that these doses are too low for an adequate effect. Therefore, Vitakruid Mucuna pruriens contains no less than 500 mg extract per capsule, and we recommend taking up to two capsules a day; an educated dosage!
