The Mucuna pruriens, or velvet bean, is a tropical climbing plant that grows exceptionally quickly. This tree, originally from South China or East India, can reach a height of at least three to a maximum of eighteen meters within a year. Incidentally, this member of the legume family is also commonly found in Africa, the Americas, and the West Indies. Mucuna pruriens is often cultivated for its purple bean-like pods, which are rich in various health-promoting nutrients. The most important is levodopa (l-dopa), of which the velvet bean is actually the richest source worldwide!L-Dopa is the direct precursor of dopamine, the neurotransmitter released when eating meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, avocados, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Nevertheless, dopamine is one of the most vulnerable neurotransmitters.
The velvet bean contains between 3.1 and 6.7% l-dopa, making it the richest known source of levodopa. However, you have to eat a lot of the fruit to experience any effect from the l-dopa. Therefore, Vitakruid Mucuna pruriens contains an extract containing high levels of the velvet bean's active ingredients.
Besides the quality of the extract, the dosage is also important. A higher dosage simply provides more active ingredients and therefore a greater effect. Most Mucuna pruriens supplements contain between 250 and 400 mg of extract per capsule. Research shows that these dosages are too low for a sufficient effect. Therefore, Vitakruid Mucuna pruriens contains a whopping 500 mg of extract per capsule, and we recommend taking up to two capsules per day; a well-founded dosage!
