As a rule, our body forms the semi-essential amino acid cysteine from l-methionine, but a lot can go wrong during this conversion process. Moreover, factors such as surgery, diet, rapid growth, or strenuous exercise can cause a semi-essential amino acid to become essential. The rate at which our body absorbs the amino acid then falls short of meeting our needs. To ensure that the body has enough cysteine available under such circumstances, supplementation with NAC 600 offers a valuable solution.Acetyl is in fact a molecular fragment; the acetyl group is therefore not a molecule in itself. We can draw a comparison with an arm or a leg: highly functional within the whole of a body, but worthless on their own. Nevertheless, the coupling of acetyl with cysteine holds great value within our body. Specifically, three properties of the molecular fragment ensure more efficient passage through the cell membrane. Acetyl is a lipid-like compound, allowing the intestine to absorb the molecule as a whole. Additionally, the acetyl bond protects the molecule against oxidation, resulting in rapid distribution within the cell. Subsequently, the enzymes present in the cell can cleave the bond extremely quickly. As a result, the body absorbs n-acetyl-l-cysteine well, unlike regular cysteine.
Glutathione is a compound of three amino acids (tripeptide) that the body produces from cysteine, glutamine, and glycine. The latter two are highly accessible through dietary intake, meaning they do not pose problematic factors for glutathione formation. Cysteine, on the other hand, is more difficult to obtain from the diet, making it the limiting factor within this compound. Furthermore, cysteine is the active part of the glutathione molecule.
But if glutathione is so important to me, why don't I just take glutathione? Research shows that the body absorbs (reduced) glutathione little to none. The gastrointestinal tract simply destroys the nutrient. Even dosages of three grams do not result in an increase in glutathione levels in the body (see graph below). And since our body does absorb the acetylated form of cysteine, supplementation with the precursor of glutathione is more effective than taking (reduced) glutathione.
