NAC is a compound of the sulfur-containing amino acid L-cysteine, which, much more than L-cysteine itself, is a very good precursor for the synthesis of intracellular glutathione.NAC is first converted into L-cysteine before being used for glutathione production. It's therefore reasonable to assume that taking L-cysteine is better than NAC for increasing glutathione production. However, NAC proves to be a much better source. L-cysteine loses an estimated 85% of its sulfur groups (the active part of glutathione) during digestion, while the more stable NAC loses only 15%. This means that after digestion, NAC has almost six times as many active sulfur groups as L-cysteine.
