What is a cold sore?A cold sore is a viral infection of the skin, on or near the lips, caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Symptoms often begin with localized itching and burning. The skin swells and turns red, after which small blisters appear. After a few days, the blisters dry up into scabs.
A cold sore is highly contagious. The virus can be transmitted through kissing or other physical contact. Once the skin has healed, the herpes simplex virus can no longer be transmitted. A characteristic of a cold sore is that it returns with some regularity.
What causes a recurring cold sore?
Causes of a recurring cold sore infection include a weakened immune system, stress, chapped lips, illness, fever, and sunburn. A common cause of cold sore recurrence is exposure to UV radiation. Unlike other parts of the body, the lips do not contain melanin, a natural filter against UV rays. Therefore, lips are more susceptible to sunburn. Lucovitaal Cold Sore Cream also contains KissMed: plant extracts and oils that hydrate the lips.
