5-HTP is a converted form of the essential amino acid L-tryptophan. The body cannot produce this amino acid itself and it must be obtained through diet. L-tryptophan occurs naturally in many protein-rich foods, both animal and plant-based, such as soybeans, eggs, poultry, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.In the body, L-tryptophan is converted into 5-HTP, the precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin. 5-HTP also occurs in nature, including in the seeds of the Griffonia simplicifolia shrub.
