Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an herb native to India, South Asia, Central Asia, and parts of Africa, yet relatively unknown in Western countries. Ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 4,000 years in the form of tea, syrup, ointment, tincture, or powder.A unique feature of ashwagandha is its strong adaptogenic (stabilizing and homeostasis-supporting) effect. It is widely used in stressful situations, among other things, because of its relaxing and calming properties. The active ingredients in the root extract have a regulating effect on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and can contribute to maintaining normal cortisol levels.
