Magnesium is the eighth-largest element on Earth. It doesn't occur in its free form in nature; it's found in large quantities in dolomite and magnesite. It's primarily extracted from brine extracted from underground salt layers. Magnesium can be extracted through electrolysis of the chloride MgCl2. Lucovitaal Magnesium 400 granules contain magnesium carbonate. This compound is poorly soluble in water and therefore not easily absorbed. However, a solution has been found!
The solution
Citric acid has been added to the magnesium granules. Magnesium carbonate reacts with this acid, creating magnesium citrate and carbon dioxide (it fizzes!) in water.
You can see that magnesium citrate dissolves: the liquid becomes clear!
