Alpha-lipoic acid is a powerful antioxidant, both fat- and water-soluble, active throughout the body, including the brain. Our bodies produce small amounts of alpha-lipoic acid, but its production decreases as we age.Sodium R-lipoate is the stabilized form of the body's natural R-alpha lipoic acid.
Most products on the market are a blend of synthetic (S-form) and natural (R-form) alpha-lipoic acid. This is due to price and because R-alpha-lipoic acid in its pure form is very unstable and temperature-sensitive. This is a thing of the past with the sodium R-lipoate compound.
