Vitamin B3 supports energy production by being a component of two important coenzymes in the body: NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and NADP (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate). These two substances activate more than two hundred specific enzymes (dehydrogenases) that are important for electron transport and cellular respiration (dissimilation). Cellular respiration is the process by which ATP (adenosine triphosphate, a carrier of chemical energy) is generated in a mitochondrion (the cell's "powerhouse") by burning nutrients. Vitamin B3 can contribute to the reduction of fatigue. It is also beneficial for the skin, mucous membranes, the nervous system, and normal psychological function.There are two forms of vitamin B3: niacin (also known as nicotinic acid) and niacinamide (also known as nicotinamide). Niacin is known to cause a flush, where the skin becomes red and warm, often accompanied by a burning, stinging, and/or itching sensation. Niacinamide is a form of niacin with an amide group attached and, in this form, does not cause a niacin flush.
