Most people consume insufficient amounts of essential fatty acids in their daily diet. This is partly due to industrially processed foods and the high levels of saturated fats and trans fats. This imbalance can have health consequences. Today's diet contains more than enough fats, but not the essential fats that are important for the body. Therefore, it is crucial to balance the ratio of the right fatty acids, which can to some extent be achieved by making adjustments to the diet.There are two types of essential fatty acids: omega-3 and omega-6. These are important for maintaining good health. Omega-3 fatty acids include alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is found in plant products and has a limited conversion to EPA and DHA. EPA is only found in fatty fish, while DHA is present in both fatty fish and algae.
Omega-6 fatty acids include linoleic acid (LA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), both of which are plant-based. Today's diet contains too much linoleic acid (6% instead of the recommended 1%). This leads to an increased conversion to arachidonic acid (AA), which can cause various issues. The fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid can help restore the balance between omega-6 fatty acids.
Gamma-linolenic acid is a relatively rare fatty acid that naturally occurs in the seeds of evening primrose, borage, and black currants. It is also found in smaller amounts in sunflower and sesame oil. The body can also produce GLA from linoleic acid. Substances that aid in this conversion include vitamins B6, C, E, selenium, zinc, and magnesium. GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid that is converted in the body into prostaglandins 1 and 3 with the help of vitamins B3, B6, and C. Some people may not convert linoleic acid sufficiently into GLA and therefore rely on one of the two main sources of GLA: evening primrose oil and borage oil. Borage oil has a much higher GLA content compared to evening primrose oil.

*Borage oil and flaxseed oil are hexane-free and cold-pressed.
