Most people consume insufficient amounts of essential fatty acids in their daily diet. This is partly due to industrially processed foods and the amount of saturated and trans fats. This imbalance can have consequences for health. Modern diets contain more than enough fats, but not the essential fats that are important for the body. It is therefore important to balance the ratio of the right fatty acids. To a certain extent, this is possible by making adjustments to the diet.There are two types of essential fatty acids, Omega-3 and Omega-6. These are important for maintaining good health. Omega-3 fatty acids include alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and decosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is found in plant-based products and has a limited conversion to EPA and DHA. EPA is found only in fatty fish, and DHA is found in both fatty fish and algae.
Omega-6 fatty acids include linoleic acid (LA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Both are plant-based. The modern diet contains too much linoleic acid (6% instead of the recommended 1%). This leads to an increased conversion to arachidonic acid (AA), which can cause symptoms. The fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid can restore the balance in the ratio of Omega-6 fatty acids.
Gamma-linolenic acid is a relatively rare fatty acid that occurs naturally in the seeds of evening primrose, borage, and blackcurrants. It is also found in small amounts in sunflower and sesame oil, among others. The body can also produce it itself from linoleic acid. Substances that aid in this conversion are Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, selenium, zinc, and magnesium. GLA is an Omega-6 fatty acid that is converted in the body into prostaglandins 1 and 3 with the help of Vitamins B3, B6, and C. Some people are unable to convert linoleic acid sufficiently into GLA and are therefore dependent on one of the two main sources of GLA: evening primrose oil and borage oil. Compared to evening primrose oil, borage oil contains a very high level of GLA.
