MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane, or organically bound sulfur. MSM contains over 34% elemental sulfur and also contains two methyl groups. MSM is naturally found in rainwater, fresh fruit, and fresh vegetables (1 to 4 mg MSM per kg). MSM is relatively volatile and easily disappears with heating or prolonged storage. The importance of MSM for life on Earth is immense. Without MSM, life on Earth as we know it would not exist. MSM is formed naturally as part of the Earth's sulfur cycle: algae and phytoplankton in the oceans absorb massive amounts of inorganic sulfur from seawater and convert it into simple organic forms. When algae and plankton die, enzymes break down the organic sulfur compounds into dimethyl sulfide (DMS). This substance is volatile and does not dissolve well in water. Therefore, it accumulates high in the atmosphere, where, under the influence of ultraviolet light and ozone, it is converted into dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and further into methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). DMSO and MSM are highly soluble in water. They form the condensation nuclei necessary for the formation of raindrops. Without DMSO and MSM in the air, clouds do not form and rain does not fall. The roots of trees and plants are able to quickly and efficiently absorb DMSO and MSM from rainwater.
Production method
Although MSM is a natural substance, it would be impossible to extract it naturally. So many trees would have to be cut down; that would be undesirable. The raw materials currently used are DMSO, water, and hydrogen peroxide. DMSO is then converted into MSM through a complex process.
