Vitamin B12 in the form of methylcobalamin, along with 5-MTHF (methyltetrahydrofolate), is required to convert homocysteine into methionine (vitamin B6 is also involved in this process). Excessively high homocysteine levels are undesirable. Methionine, in turn, is primarily used for the production of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), which, as a methyl donor, is involved in the production of DNA, RNA, phospholipids, proteins, and neurotransmitters, among other things. Thus, vitamin B12 and folate are involved in the cell division process and are necessary for the production of red blood cells.Through the joint involvement of Vitamin B12 and folate (and Vitamin B6) in DNA synthesis and protein synthesis, these nutrients influence the activation of certain immune cells and thus the normal functioning of the immune system.
In the form of adenosylcobalamin (in the mitochondria), vitamin B12 is involved in the conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA, which plays a role in the citric acid cycle (a series of biochemical reactions that provide energy metabolism at the cellular level). Vitamin B12 and folate are also necessary for normal brain and nerve function, and thus beneficial for concentration, memory, and mood. Vitamin B12 and folate can also help reduce fatigue.
Sometimes vitamin B12 is not absorbed well in certain people. In such situations, supplementing the diet with a high-dose B12 supplement can offer a solution.
