The gram-positive bacterium Lactobacillus reuteri is naturally present in the human intestinal tract.Until the 1960s, the Lactobacillus Reuteri bacterium was found in the gut flora of 30 to 40 percent of the population (until that time, people still consumed a lot of fermented foods in which Lactobacillus Reuteri is found). Today, this has decreased to about 10 to 20 percent.
This decline is most likely due to changed dietary patterns, the frequent use of antibiotics, and artificial infant formula, since Lactobacillus reuteri is passed on through breast milk.
